Raleigh Area Land Trust Celebrates National Homeownership Month by Offering a New Path for Families Priced Out of Wake County
In a housing market where rising prices are forcing many families to give up on the dream of owning a home, Raleigh Area Land Trust (RALT is showing that a different future is possible.

This National Homeownership Month, RALT is spotlighting a new path to ownership—one that prioritizes community, equity, and long-term affordability. As Wake County continues to grow, so do the pressures on working families. Homes that once sold for $250,000 now go for double that, and affordable options are vanishing. For many first-time buyers, it feels like the door to homeownership has been closed.
RALT is reopening that door.

Through a model called a community land trust (CLT), RALT makes homes more affordable through shared equity. By separating the cost of the land from the house itself, families can buy at significantly reduced prices.
“People want to put down roots. They want to stop renting and begin to build equity for their future. RALT helps make that possible, even in one of the fastest-growing counties in the country,” said Kevin Campbell, Executive Director of RALT.
This summer, RALT will break ground on its most ambitious project yet: a permanently affordable community of 18 homes in Raleigh’s Idlewild neighborhood. These permanently affordable homes will go to local families who might otherwise be shut out of the housing market—teachers, nonprofit workers, caregivers—people who make the city thrive.
“What makes RALT’s work different isn’t just the price tag. It’s the promise: homes will remain affordable forever. That means every family who benefits today is paving the way for another family tomorrow,” said Campbell.
